AUSTRALIAN MONARCHY
Time for a change
About
Constitutional monarchists rightly argue that a Constitutional Monarchy is the best form of government.
Republicans rightly argue that the head of Australia should be an Australian.
An Australian Monarchy provides a solution to both sides of the argument by establishing an Australian royal family - a Constitutional Monarchy headed by an Australian.
Other advanced countries such as Norway and Spain have previously adopted this approach.
How Does it Work?
For the first time in Australian history, an Australian born person is a Queen - Queen Mary of Denmark. Her four children are royalty, while also being half Australian and descendants of Queen Victoria.
Queen Mary's eldest son (and his heirs) will become King of Denmark. However, one of the other three children may elect to become Australia's first King or Queen, thus beginning the Australian Monarchy. Although our first Monarch would be half Australian, their heirs would be Australian born resulting in an Australian Head of State within only one generation.
The transition to the Australian Royalty would be seamless - the Monarch would reside at Yarralumla, the current residence of the Governor General. All Governor General duties would be assumed by the Monarch while State Governors would be abolished.
The change to the Constitution is minimal. The Constitution assumes "the Queen” to be Queen Victoria who was Queen at the time of Federation. The Constitution need only be updated to redefine the definition of the Queen (or King) to be that of the Queen (or King) of Australia. The single reference to the Monarchy of the United Kingdom would be replaced with the Monarchy of Australia, and the single reference to sovereignty of the United Kingdom be replaced with the sovereignty of Australia.
All other terms in the Constitution would remain the same, there being no need to change the document to redefine Australia’s form of government.
The Future
For the first time in its history, Australia can legitimately claim to have Australians with royal blood. The Australian Monarchy is an extremely simple solution to preserving a constitutional monarchy system of Government while installing an Australian as Head of State, satisfying both Monarchist and Republican objections.
